It seems to me, in Aristasia the term "innocence" brings to mind a very different concept than it does in the pit. I think that in the pit innocence is too often associated with ignorance, but that is not so. It is quite possible to be very ignorant and not innocent at all. In fact I think innocence has more to do with an openness to ideas, which often leads to the innocent being far less ignorant then their less than innocent counter parts.

As well, Aristasian innocence seems to be associated with an openness to joy and beauty which (in my mind at least) means an openness to the true nature of the universe.

You are right about innocence. I remember something Miss StClare wrote on this exact subject - the idea that knowledge destroys innocence.

She explained that only false knowledge is hostile to innocence. The modern ideas of maid, based ultimately on the Animal Thesis are destructive of innocence - they breed cynicism, they reduce maid to the lowest common denominator, they see people as survival-and-reproduction machines and their quest for beauty and purity as an illusion.

This is what the Pit calls knowledge, but it is not knowledge. It is falsehood.

When we gain true knowledge of what maid really is our sense of wonder returns. Our understanding that the world is deep and rich and spiritual rather than shallow and coarse and material returns. The things we intuitively felt as children turn out to be true.

And innocence - true innocence - is regained. For innocence is truth.
