In yesterday's lecture, I cited an essay entitled "Lars Porsena" by professor C.S. Lewis on the use of foul language in literature. I am afraid I owe you all an apology - my memory played me false.

Lars Porsena: or the Future of Swearing and Improper Language is in fact a short book by Mr. Robert Graves. The essay I intended to cite is simply entitled "Four Letter Words" and is to be found in Selected Literary Essays by C.S. Lewis, edited by Mr. Walter Hooper. It is a very good refutation of the "validity" of coarse language in literature and the historical claims made for it by some modern writers (of whom Mr. Graves is an excellent example).
